Welcome sign for President Donald J. Trump International Airport in Palm Beach, Florida, following the airport's official renaming.

PALM BEACH, Fla. — Florida’s newly renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport officially welcomed its first arrivals Thursday, marking the beginning of a new chapter for one of the state’s busiest airports following a controversial but historic name change honoring President Donald Trump.

The milestone was marked shortly after 5 a.m. when “Trump Force One,” President Trump’s Boeing 757, became the first aircraft to land under the airport’s new name. On board were Eric Trump, Donald Trump Jr., Bettina Trump, and several Florida state and local officials who participated in events commemorating the transition.

Commercial operations continued without interruption as scheduled flights from Newark and Atlanta appeared on arrival boards displaying the airport’s new name. While airport signage and digital systems are being updated, officials said travelers should expect no disruption to airline operations or passenger services during the transition.

“This is a special moment,” Eric Trump said after arriving in Palm Beach, reflecting on decades of family travel to South Florida after President Trump purchased Mar-a-Lago in the mid-1980s. He said the family never imagined the airport would one day bear his father’s name.

A New Name for a Familiar Gateway

The airport, formerly known as Palm Beach International Airport, was officially renamed earlier this year after the Florida Legislature approved legislation honoring the president’s longstanding ties to Palm Beach County.

The airport serves millions of passengers annually and is located just a few miles from Mar-a-Lago, where President Trump has spent significant time during both of his administrations.

Although the official name change took effect Thursday, the airport’s internationally recognized PBI airport code will remain in use until Aug. 18, when aviation systems are expected to complete the transition. Airport officials have emphasized that passengers should continue using the PBI airport code when booking flights until federal databases are updated.

Historic First Flight

The inaugural arrival included several elected officials who supported the renaming effort, among them Florida House Speaker Daniel Perez, Palm Beach County Mayor Sara Baxter, Palm Beach County Administrator Joe Abruzzo, and Palm Beach County commissioners.

Officials described the first landing as a symbolic moment recognizing President Trump’s influence on Palm Beach and Florida politics.

Mayor Sara Baxter called the experience “touching a piece of history,” while other passengers described applause aboard the aircraft as it touched down on the runway.

Airport Remains Fully Operational

Airport officials stressed that the renaming will have little impact on travelers beyond new branding appearing on signs, websites, and airport facilities.

Flights will continue operating normally, and no airport closures or service interruptions are expected during the transition. The estimated cost of updating airport signage, branding, and infrastructure is approximately $2.75 million, according to county officials.

National Spotlight

The airport has become increasingly associated with President Trump over the past decade because of its proximity to Mar-a-Lago and the president’s frequent visits to Palm Beach County.

Arrivals aboard Air Force One and Trump’s private aircraft have routinely drawn national media coverage, making the airport one of Florida’s most recognizable aviation hubs outside Miami and Orlando.

Security at the airport has also expanded in recent years, including additional protective technology installed following heightened security concerns near Mar-a-Lago.

Supporters of the renaming argue the airport’s new identity reflects President Trump’s decades-long connection to Palm Beach and his national prominence. Critics have questioned naming a publicly owned airport after a sitting president, making the issue one of the more closely watched symbolic debates during this year’s legislative session.

Regardless of the political debate, Thursday marked the official beginning of operations under the airport’s new name as passengers continued traveling through one of South Florida’s busiest transportation gateways.
