U.S. Rep. Cory Mills during a House committee hearing as reports emerge of a Justice Department investigation.

U.S. Rep. Cory Mills, the Republican congressman representing Florida’s 7th Congressional District, is denying reports that he is under federal criminal investigation, calling the claims politically motivated and saying he has not been notified of any Justice Department probe.

The response came after NBC News and ABC News reported Wednesday, citing sources familiar with the matter, that the U.S. Department of Justice is conducting a criminal investigation involving Mills. According to those reports, investigators are examining the congressman’s finances and certain overseas business activities through the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida.

The Department of Justice has not publicly confirmed the existence of any investigation, and no criminal charges have been announced.

Mills Responds to Reports

In a statement posted on social media, Mills said he has no knowledge of any federal investigation and criticized the reports.

“We have received media inquiries regarding reports of a potential Department of Justice investigation. This appears to be a desperate lie from my political opponents. I am not aware of any DOJ investigation, nor has there been any confirmation of any such investigation, and I would fully cooperate if there was one. I have nothing to hide.”

Mills’ office has not announced receiving any subpoena or notification from federal investigators.

Separate From House Ethics Investigation

The reported DOJ investigation is separate from an ongoing House Ethics Committee investigation that has been underway since late 2025.

The House Ethics Committee is reviewing allegations involving campaign finance reporting, potential misuse of official congressional resources, and other conduct identified in referrals from the Office of Congressional Conduct.

The committee has emphasized that its investigation remains ongoing and that no findings of wrongdoing have been issued.

According to the committee, an investigative subcommittee has issued more than 20 subpoenas, reviewed thousands of pages of records, and contacted dozens of witnesses as part of its continuing investigation. The committee has not reached any final conclusions regarding the allegations.

The ethics inquiry also followed public allegations made by Mills’ former girlfriend. Those allegations resulted in a temporary domestic violence protective order issued by a Florida court directing the congressman to avoid contact with her. Mills has denied wrongdoing.

Campaign Continues Ahead of Republican Primary

Despite the investigations and legal scrutiny, Mills remains on the ballot for Florida’s August Republican primary in the 7th Congressional District.

Earlier this year, a legal challenge sought to remove Mills from the ballot, alleging that his candidate qualifying documents had been improperly notarized while he was in Washington, D.C. A state judge dismissed the lawsuit with prejudice, allowing Mills to remain a candidate and permanently closing the case.

Mills, who was first elected to Congress in 2022, is one of several Republicans seeking the party’s nomination to represent portions of Central Florida in Florida’s 7th Congressional District.
