Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz speaks outside the Miramar ICE-ERO Center following an unannounced congressional oversight inspection.

U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Weston, said Thursday that she found what she described as “horrific” conditions during an unannounced inspection of a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) processing facility in Miramar, where immigrant advocates have alleged detainees are being held in overcrowded and inhumane conditions.

The visit followed growing concerns raised by immigrant advocacy organizations, which claim migrants at the facility have been exposed to excessive heat, overcrowding, inadequate sanitation, and limited access to food and water.

Federal law grants members of Congress the authority to conduct oversight visits at immigration detention facilities as part of their legislative responsibilities, allowing lawmakers to inspect conditions without prior notice.

Congresswoman describes overcrowded holding areas

Following her visit, Wasserman Schultz told reporters she observed approximately 150 detainees inside the Miramar processing center.

Speaking outside the facility, she described what she witnessed as deeply troubling.

“What I saw were people packed in like sardines, in conditions I wouldn’t wish upon my worst enemy,” Wasserman Schultz said. “These conditions are horrific.”

According to the congresswoman, she inspected four holding areas—two designated for men and two for women—that she believes exceeded their intended capacity.

In a statement released after the inspection, Wasserman Schultz said one men’s holding room measuring approximately 15 feet by 15 feet contained about 70 detainees, while a women’s holding room measuring roughly 7 feet by 14 feet held approximately 40 people.

She said detainees were sleeping on hard floors and using exposed toilets located inside the holding areas.

Concerns raised over food, water and medical care

Wasserman Schultz said ICE personnel informed her detainees receive one bottle of water each day, three microwave meals daily, and access to showers every other day.

She also said officials acknowledged medical emergencies requiring emergency responders occur regularly at the facility and that no dedicated space currently exists for attorney visits or family visitation.

During Thursday’s news conference, an ambulance arrived at the facility while reporters and elected officials were present.

The congresswoman additionally questioned what she said was the lack of formal inspections since the Miramar processing center began operating in October 2025.

ICE standards and response

ICE detention facilities operate under the agency’s National Detention Standards, which establish requirements for housing, sanitation, nutrition, medical care, legal access, safety and detainee welfare.

Although ICE did not immediately respond to Wasserman Schultz’s specific allegations Thursday, the agency has previously stated that it is “committed to ensuring that all those in custody reside in safe, secure and humane environments.”

The Florida Pundit contacted ICE requesting additional comment regarding the conditions described during the inspection. This story will be updated if the agency provides additional information or responds to the congresswoman’s allegations.

Immigration remains central political issue

The inspection comes as immigration continues to be one of Florida’s most closely watched political issues heading into the 2026 elections.

Congressional oversight of federal detention facilities, border security, detention standards and immigration enforcement are expected to remain significant topics of debate in both Florida and Washington throughout the campaign season.
