NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — U.S. Rep. Cory Mills has agreed to debate his three Republican primary opponents in New Smyrna Beach, setting up a closely watched confrontation less than two weeks before Florida’s Aug. 18 primary election.
Mills will appear alongside Sarah Ulrich, Ryan Elijah and Michael Johnson at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Brannon Center, according to an event announcement reported by the Daytona Beach News-Journal.
The Volusia County Republican Executive Committee is hosting the four-candidate debate. Organizers have warned that seating will be limited and that the doors will close once the venue reaches capacity.
The event gives Mills’ challengers their first opportunity to question the incumbent directly on the same stage as the Republican primary enters its final stretch.
It also comes as Mills faces an extensive House Ethics Committee investigation and disputes news reports alleging that the Department of Justice is conducting a separate inquiry.
Mills skipped an earlier televised debate
Mills did not participate in a July 10 Republican debate hosted by WESH 2 News in Orlando.
The earlier WESH forum featured Mills’ three Republican challengers discussing the issues without the incumbent present. The full debate can be viewed below.
The congressman called that event “rigged,” pointing to Elijah’s former television career and his employment at an Orlando station that competed with WESH.
Elijah, a former Central Florida television anchor, rejected that objection and continued pressing Mills to participate in a forum with the entire Republican field.
The Aug. 5 event will now give voters an opportunity to evaluate all four candidates together.
Elijah said candidates owe voters a discussion of the issues and welcomed Mills’ decision to participate. He has emerged as a prominent challenger since entering the race in April and recently received the endorsement of state Sen. Tom Wright.

Challengers prepare to confront incumbent
Ulrich, a Port Orange businesswoman, has positioned herself as a political outsider and emphasized character and accountability during the campaign.
She said the debate would allow her to explain how she differs from the other candidates and why those differences should matter to voters.
Michael Johnson, an Altamonte Springs candidate who also challenged Mills in 2024, has focused much of his campaign on the incumbent’s military record and financial affairs.
Johnson has called on Mills to release additional military documentation and personal tax records. Mills has disputed accusations made against him and defended his military service.
The Florida Pundit has not independently verified every allegation raised by Mills’ primary opponents. Statements made during the campaign should be evaluated as partisan claims unless supported by official records or other independently verifiable evidence.
House investigation remains active
The House Committee on Ethics established an investigative subcommittee in November 2025 to examine multiple allegations involving Mills.
In a May update, the bipartisan committee described the allegations as “serious and complex.” It said investigators had authorized more than 20 subpoenas, collected thousands of documents and contacted dozens of witnesses.
The committee’s investigation is officially confirmed and remains active. It has not issued final findings determining that Mills violated federal law or House rules.
Separately, several news organizations have reported that the Justice Department is examining matters involving the congressman. The Justice Department and FBI have not publicly confirmed such an inquiry, and no criminal charge has been announced.
Mills has denied wrongdoing and characterized the reports as politically motivated. In an interview with The Floridian, he said neither the Justice Department nor the FBI had confirmed an investigation and that federal investigators had not contacted him.
Mills said he would cooperate if approached because he had “nothing to hide.”
“The DOJ and the FBI has never confirmed any such investigation exists,” Mills said in an interview with The Floridian.

Debate could shape final days of primary
Florida’s 7th Congressional District includes Seminole County and southern Volusia County. The Republican nominee will advance to the Nov. 3 general election in a district national Democrats are attempting to make competitive.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has included CD-7 in its Red to Blue program, placing additional pressure on Republicans to nominate a candidate capable of defending the seat.
House Speaker Mike Johnson continued supporting Mills this week, describing him as a productive member of the Republican conference. The speaker also said he had no personal knowledge of the reported Justice Department inquiry.
The Aug. 5 debate is expected to be moderated by Javier Manjarres, publisher of The Floridian, according to the Daytona Beach News-Journal.
For Mills, the forum provides an opportunity to redirect attention toward his congressional record and policy positions.
For Ulrich, Elijah and Johnson, it offers a chance to question the incumbent directly and argue that Republican voters should choose new representation.
With the primary approaching, the debate could become one of the most consequential events remaining in Florida’s closely watched 7th District race.
