Florida politics enters a pivotal weekend with developments spanning the governor’s race, property taxes, congressional politics and immigration enforcement.
U.S. Sen. Rick Scott says he will vote for Florida’s proposed Amendment 3 property-tax measure, while a new national forecast has moved the 2026 governor’s race from “Safe Republican” to “Likely Republican.” Rep. Cory Mills has also agreed to debate his three Republican primary challengers on Aug. 5.
Meanwhile, Florida has awarded $32.8 million to local governments and law-enforcement agencies for immigration-enforcement expenses, and a Leon County judge is expected to rule Monday on James Fishback’s eligibility for the Republican gubernatorial primary.

SENATE WATCH
Rick Scott Backs Florida Amendment 3
U.S. Sen. Rick Scott said Friday that he will vote for Florida’s proposed property-tax amendment while urging counties and municipalities to eliminate waste without reducing police protection, fire rescue or other essential services.
“I support any tax or fee cut, and I am going to be voting for it,” Scott wrote after earlier comments raised questions about whether he had broken with Gov. Ron DeSantis over the proposal.
Amendment 3 would increase the homestead exemption for non-school property taxes to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 beginning in 2028. A legislative analysis estimates that recurring reductions in local revenue could reach approximately $11.86 billion annually by the 2031–32 fiscal year.
The amendment requires at least 60% approval in the Nov. 3 General Election. Its ballot language also faces pending legal challenges.
GOVERNOR’S RACE
Florida Governor’s Race Moves to “Likely Republican”
Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball moved Florida’s open gubernatorial race from “Safe Republican” to “Likely Republican,” giving Democrats their first ratings improvement of the campaign while continuing to favor Republican Byron Donalds.
The change reflects closer general-election polling between Donalds and Democrat David Jolly, although analysts emphasized that Florida is not yet considered a genuine toss-up.
The new gubernatorial rating increases the pressure on both campaigns as the primary approaches. Donalds remains the overwhelming favorite for the Republican nomination, while Jolly continues working to consolidate Democratic support.
Judge Expected to Rule on James Fishback’s Ballot Eligibility Monday
A Leon County judge is expected to rule Monday on whether Republican gubernatorial candidate James Fishback satisfies Florida’s seven-year residency requirement.
The decision follows a daylong hearing examining Fishback’s residences, voter registration, business records and time spent outside Florida.
The ruling could either remove Fishback from the gubernatorial ballot or allow him to continue challenging Donalds, Lt. Gov. Jay Collins and former House Speaker Paul Renner in the Republican primary.
CONGRESSIONAL WATCH
Cory Mills Agrees to Debate Republican Challengers
Rep. Cory Mills has agreed to debate Sarah Ulrich, Ryan Elijah and Michael Johnson at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Brannon Center in New Smyrna Beach.
The Volusia County Republican Executive Committee is hosting the forum, which will put the entire CD-7 Republican field onstage less than two weeks before the primary.
The Mills debate comes as a House Ethics Committee investigation remains active and the congressman disputes reports that the Justice Department is conducting a separate inquiry. The Justice Department has not publicly confirmed an investigation, and no criminal charge has been announced.
Mills skipped an earlier WESH debate involving his three challengers. The Aug. 5 forum gives Republican voters their first opportunity to compare the entire field directly.
Three Florida Democrats Join GOP on Stock-Trading and Voter ID Bill
Three Florida Democrats joined House Republicans in approving legislation that would restrict congressional stock trading while imposing federal voter-identification requirements.
Democratic Reps. Kathy Castor, Jared Moskowitz and Darren Soto voted with House Republicans to pass H.R. 7008, a package that combines restrictions on congressional stock purchases with nationwide voter-identification requirements.
The bill passed 232–198, with 13 Democrats voting in favor. Florida provided more Democratic votes for the measure than any other state.
If enacted, the legislation would prohibit members of Congress and their immediate families from purchasing individual securities while requiring photo identification for in-person voting in federal elections.
The bill now heads to the Senate, where its prospects remain uncertain.
ATTORNEY GENERAL WATCH
Florida Attorney General Announces Charges Against 49 Defendants
Attorney General James Uthmeier announced charges against 49 defendants following a multi-agency investigation targeting alleged fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine trafficking networks.
Operation Ice Breaker II involved organizations operating across Volusia, Flagler, St. Johns, Marion and Orange counties. Prosecutors said additional arrests or charges could follow.
The Central Florida fentanyl investigation was conducted by state and local law enforcement agencies and will be prosecuted by the Office of Statewide Prosecution and the Seventh Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office.

Florida Awards $32.8 Million for Immigration Enforcement
Florida awarded $32,827,861.53 to 12 local law enforcement agencies and governments for expenses associated with immigration enforcement and cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Sheriff’s offices in Osceola, Orange and Collier counties received nearly $30.2 million combined—approximately 92% of the funding announced during the week.
The immigration-enforcement reimbursements can cover detention beds, equipment, training, travel, technology and certain bonuses connected to local participation in federal immigration programs.
State announcements identified each recipient and award amount but did not provide an agency-by-agency breakdown of the specific reimbursed expenses.
STATE & LOCAL GOVERNMENT
Miami-Dade Regains Control of “Alligator Alcatraz” Airport
Miami-Dade County resumed control of the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport after Florida closed and dismantled the temporary immigration detention facility known as “Alligator Alcatraz.”
The return of the Dade-Collier airport to Miami-Dade control ends the state’s temporary use of the county-owned facility under emergency authority. The airport will return to its traditional role supporting pilot training and other aviation operations.
The closure does not end the broader political and legal debate surrounding Florida’s immigration-enforcement policies.
Lakeland Considers Temporary Data Center Moratorium
Lakeland commissioners are moving toward a one-year moratorium on new large-scale data centers while city officials study their possible effects on electricity, water, transportation and nearby communities.
The proposal follows resident opposition to Project Swan and comes as local governments across Florida consider how to regulate rapidly expanding technology infrastructure.
The Lakeland data-center moratorium could become an important test of how Florida cities balance economic development with utility costs and community concerns.
