Surfside findings, congressional maneuvering, campaign money, and immigration enforcement shaped the week in Florida politics.

🏛️ DOME Weekend is The Florida Pundit’s weekly briefing on the people, policies, campaigns, and controversies shaping Florida politics.

Florida politics moved quickly this week, with new developments touching public safety, campaign finance, congressional races, immigration enforcement, and the 2026 election cycle.

From the federal findings into the Surfside condo collapse to new movement in South Florida congressional races, the week offered a clear reminder: Florida’s political fights are increasingly tied to questions of accountability, public trust, and the direction of the state heading into 2026.

🏛️ Under the Dome

The biggest accountability story of the week came from the federal investigation into the Surfside condo collapse, which renewed debate over building safety, oversight, inspections, and government responsibility.

Federal investigators concluded that the Champlain Towers South collapse began weeks before the building fell, raising renewed questions about warning signs, structural maintenance, and how local and state officials respond when public safety risks are identified.

The findings are likely to keep condo safety, building regulation, and local government oversight in Florida’s political conversation.

🗳️ Election Watch

South Florida’s congressional map continued shifting as U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson’s retirement opened the door to a crowded race in Florida’s 24th Congressional District.

Wilson backed Oliver Gilbert in the race, giving him a major establishment endorsement in a contest expected to draw intense local and national attention.

Meanwhile, in Florida’s 27th Congressional District, Eliott Rodríguez released a campaign poll showing majority support in the Democratic primary. As always, The Florida Pundit treats campaign polling as one data point, not a final measure of voter sentiment.

The 2026 election calendar is also moving closer. Florida’s Primary Election is scheduled for August 18, 2026, with the General Election set for November 3, 2026.

💰 Money Trail

The week’s biggest campaign finance development involved Republican gubernatorial candidate James Fishback, who was ordered by a federal judge to pay more than $1.2 million in legal fees amid his ongoing dispute with Greenlight.

The order adds another complication to Fishback’s campaign as Florida Republicans continue positioning for the 2026 governor’s race.

Campaign finance, legal disputes, donor networks, and outside spending will remain central themes as statewide races become more competitive.

🐊 The Swamp

Government accountability remained a defining theme across Florida politics this week.

From Surfside safety findings to campaign finance disputes and questions surrounding public oversight, the week’s stories showed how policy decisions, public records, and legal battles can quickly become campaign issues.

The Florida Pundit will continue tracking government spending, ethics questions, public safety oversight, and the political insiders shaping major decisions across the state.

👀 What We’re Watching Next Week

The Florida Pundit newsroom is watching:

• New developments in the 2026 governor’s race

• Additional congressional endorsements in South Florida

• Campaign finance filings and donor activity

• Florida election administration deadlines

• Public safety and condo oversight debates after the Surfside findings

• Immigration enforcement fallout after the closure of “Alligator Alcatraz”

Developing stories will be published after official documents, campaign filings, court records, or primary sources are reviewed.
