Florida Democratic U.S. Senate candidates Alex Vindman and Angie Nixon are drawing one of the sharpest policy contrasts of the 2026 primary campaign after taking different positions on continued U.S. aid to Israel.
The debate intensified after the U.S. House of Representatives voted last week on an amendment offered by Rep. Thomas Massie, a Kentucky Republican, that sought to eliminate approximately $3.3 billion in military and humanitarian assistance for Israel. The amendment ultimately failed, but it drew support from 103 House Democrats, underscoring growing divisions within the party over U.S. policy toward Israel and the ongoing war in Gaza.
Among Florida’s congressional delegation, Democratic U.S. Rep. Maxwell Frost was the only member to vote in favor of the amendment. The state’s other Democratic representatives — Kathy Castor, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Lois Frankel, Jared Moskowitz, Darren Soto, and Frederica Wilson — joined every Florida Republican in voting against the proposal.
House Vote Reflects Growing Democratic Divide
Supporters of the amendment argued that continued U.S. assistance should not be provided while concerns persist over civilian casualties and humanitarian conditions in Gaza.
Opponents maintained that Israel remains one of America’s closest allies in the Middle East and that continued security assistance is essential following Hamas’ October 7, 2023, terrorist attack that killed more than 1,200 Israelis and resulted in hundreds of hostages being taken into Gaza.
The conflict has since evolved into one of the deadliest wars in the region in decades, fueling growing debate inside the Democratic Party over military aid, humanitarian assistance, and U.S. foreign policy.
The differing responses from Florida’s Democratic Senate candidates illustrate those broader national divisions.
Vindman Emphasizes Security Partnership While Criticizing Netanyahu
Speaking during the Florida Democratic Party’s Leadership Blue conference over the weekend, Vindman declined to say explicitly how he would have voted on the House amendment.
Instead, the retired Army lieutenant colonel argued that the conflict requires a more nuanced approach.
“Nobody gets a free pass,” Vindman said.
Vindman reiterated his support for a two-state solution while criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, saying settlement policies have undermined long-term peace efforts.
“I’m absolutely committed to a two-state solution,” Vindman said. “I’m very much concerned about a policy that undermines a two-state solution.”
At the same time, he stressed that Israel remains an essential American ally.
“I’m also committed to the security of the State of Israel as a generational partner of the United States — a country that advances U.S. interests in the region,” he said.
Vindman added that policymakers should avoid viewing the conflict in simplistic terms.
“We don’t need simple black-and-white calls. We need somebody who has the experience and the judgment to call balls and strikes regardless of the circumstances.”
Nixon Says She Would Have Supported Ending Funding
Nixon took a much more direct position.
The Jacksonville Democrat said she would have voted in favor of Massie’s amendment, arguing that the United States should not continue funding governments accused of violating international law or human rights.
“I would have voted in support of that because we cannot continue to send money to countries that are violating international law,” Nixon said during an interview with WMNF Radio.
She rejected suggestions that criticism of Israeli government policy should be viewed as antisemitic.
“Me stating this does not make me antisemitic at all,” Nixon said.
Nixon has long been one of Florida’s most outspoken Democratic supporters of a cease-fire in Gaza.
During a 2023 Special Session of the Florida Legislature, she sponsored a resolution calling for a cease-fire shortly after Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel.
The proposal received support from only one other lawmaker — Democratic Rep. Anna Eskamani — and was overwhelmingly rejected.
Nixon later said she received death threats following the vote and was labeled antisemitic and a terrorist by critics.
Despite the backlash, she continues to defend her position.
“I will always fight to stand on the right side of history,” Nixon said.
Public Opinion Has Shifted
Recent national polling suggests Democratic voters have become increasingly critical of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.
According to Gallup, released earlier this year, 41% of Americans now say they sympathize more with Palestinians compared with 36% who say they sympathize more with Israelis. One year earlier, Americans favored Israel by a substantially wider margin.
Among Democrats, the shift has been even more pronounced.
A New York Times/Siena College survey published in May found that approximately 60% of Democratic voters sympathize more with Palestinians, while just 15% expressed greater sympathy toward Israel.
Those changing attitudes are increasingly influencing Democratic primaries across the country, including Florida’s developing U.S. Senate race.
Israel Policy Emerges as Early Flashpoint in Senate Primary
While economic issues, immigration, and affordability are expected to dominate Florida’s 2026 Senate campaign, U.S. policy toward Israel has emerged as one of the clearest policy differences between Vindman and Nixon.
Vindman has attempted to balance criticism of the Netanyahu government with continued support for Israel’s long-standing security partnership with the United States.
Nixon has aligned herself with the Democratic Party’s progressive wing by calling for an end to U.S. funding while citing humanitarian concerns in Gaza.
With the Democratic primary still taking shape, the contrasting positions underscore how foreign policy—while not typically a dominant issue in Florida Senate races—could become an important point of distinction between the candidates as they compete for Democratic voters.
