Byron Donalds addresses Republicans during the Florida GOP Sunshine State Showdown in Hollywood.

Florida’s Republican gubernatorial primary took center stage Saturday at the Republican Party of Florida’s Sunshine State Showdown, even without the debate many activists expected.

After party officials determined that only U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds met the fundraising and polling requirements to participate, the Republican Party canceled the debate rather than hold a one-candidate event. The decision drew criticism from Donalds’ rivals, who used individual speaking opportunities during the convention to challenge the race’s frontrunner before hundreds of Republican activists.

Collins Questions Donalds’ Electability

Lt. Gov. Jay Collins delivered the convention’s sharpest criticism of Donalds, arguing that Republicans should nominate a candidate capable of withstanding the scrutiny of a statewide general election.

Before Collins took the stage, Second Lady Layla Collins praised her husband as a principled conservative prepared to continue Gov. Ron DeSantis‘ policy agenda while leading Florida into its next chapter.

Collins later contrasted his campaign with Donalds’, warning delegates that Democrats would aggressively target Donalds’ financial disclosures, congressional record, and past controversies if he becomes the Republican nominee.

He argued that Democratic nominee David Jolly would have the financial resources to launch sustained attacks during the general election and said Republicans should carefully consider which candidate is best positioned to withstand that scrutiny.

Without presenting evidence for the allegations himself, Collins predicted Democratic operatives would raise questions about Donalds’ wealth, stock trades, donor relationships, and previous headlines if the congressman advances to the general election.

Renner Focuses on Leadership Experience

Former House Speaker Paul Renner took a different approach, emphasizing his record in public service rather than engaging in direct personal criticism.

Renner highlighted his experience as a Navy veteran, prosecutor, state representative, and House Speaker, arguing that Florida’s next governor should have a proven record of leading during difficult moments.

He recalled the uncertainty surrounding Florida’s 2018 gubernatorial election and said Republican leadership under Gov. Ron DeSantis helped guide the state through major challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

Renner also pointed to his role supporting conservative priorities, including campaigns against constitutional amendments and efforts to elect conservative school board members throughout Florida.

He described himself as the only candidate in the race with a consistent record of stepping into difficult political battles while warning against what he characterized as “transactional politics.”

Donalds Remains the Front-Runner

Although Donalds did not participate in a debate, he closed the convention with a question-and-answer session and continued receiving strong support from Republican leaders.

U.S. Sen. Rick Scott reaffirmed his endorsement, introducing Donalds as Florida’s next governor and praising his conservative record.

The congressman continues to hold significant fundraising and polling advantages over the rest of the Republican field.

Republican Primary Continues

The Sunshine State Showdown highlighted the increasingly competitive Republican primary despite Donalds’ commanding position.

While Collins and Renner continue arguing that Republican voters deserve a direct comparison between candidates, party officials maintain that debate qualification standards were established in advance and applied equally to every campaign.

As the primary campaign continues, questions surrounding electability, leadership experience, and the future direction of Florida’s conservative movement are likely to remain central themes in the race.
