U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson stands outside the U.S. Capitol.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Residents of Florida’s 24th Congressional District say the person replacing retiring U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson should remain visible in the community, listen closely to constituents and be willing to challenge established political institutions.

Voters interviewed by the Miami Herald emphasized accessibility and independence as they considered the crowded field competing to represent the majority-Black South Florida district.

“You have to show up, listen, and meet voters where they are,” residents told the newspaper as part of its reporting on expectations for Wilson’s successor.

The comments reflect the views of the residents interviewed and do not constitute a scientific survey of the district’s electorate.

Accessibility Emerges as a Voter Priority

The voter interviews suggest that personal visibility may be an important consideration in the Aug. 18 Democratic primary.

Residents expressed interest in a representative who would maintain an active presence across the district instead of appearing only during campaign season. Some said Wilson’s successor should be prepared to challenge party leaders and government institutions when local interests are at stake.

The description of the next representative as someone willing to “be rebellious” reflects a desire for political independence rather than allegiance to a particular candidate.

Accessibility can carry particular importance in congressional districts where residents frequently seek assistance involving immigration cases, federal benefits, veterans’ services, passports and other federal programs.

Wilson’s congressional office has provided those constituent services while she represented communities across Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

Affordability, Housing and Infrastructure Shape Contest

Residents interviewed for the report also identified affordability, housing and infrastructure among their priorities.

Those concerns extend beyond traditional congressional responsibilities but can be affected by federal funding, housing programs, transportation grants and disaster assistance.

South Florida’s housing costs have continued placing pressure on working families, seniors and renters. Infrastructure concerns include transportation, flooding, drainage and the ability of rapidly growing communities to obtain federal support for major public projects.

Candidates seeking Wilson’s seat will need to explain what role they believe Congress should play in addressing those issues and how they would compete for federal resources benefiting the district.

Temporary Protected Status Remains Important

The future of Temporary Protected Status, particularly for Haitian immigrants, also emerged as a concern among residents.

District 24 includes communities with substantial Haitian and Caribbean populations. Changes to TPS can affect residents’ authorization to work and remain in the United States, making federal immigration policy an immediate local issue.

Members of Congress cannot independently grant or extend TPS, which is administered by the executive branch. They can introduce legislation, conduct oversight, advocate for affected constituents and pressure federal agencies over immigration policy.

Candidates’ positions on TPS and immigration enforcement could therefore become significant dividing lines before the Democratic primary.

Crowded Field Competes to Replace Wilson

Ten candidates qualified across party lines for the race after Wilson announced that she would not seek another term.

The Democratic field includes Miami-Dade County Commissioner Oliver Gilbert, state Sen. Shevrin Jones, Kendrick Meek Jr., former Miami-Dade Commissioner Jean Monestime, physician and retired Air Force Col. Rudolph Moise, attorney Roderick Vereen and arts administrator Marshall Davis.

Wilson has endorsed Gilbert, giving him the retiring congresswoman’s support in the contest to replace her. Jones, however, has attracted his own endorsements and remained competitive in early polling.

The Florida Pundit reported July 18 that polling showed a competitive Democratic primary between Gilbert and Jones, with a substantial share of voters still undecided.

Because District 24 strongly favors Democrats, the winner of the Democratic primary is expected to enter the general election with a significant structural advantage.

Race Tests Candidates’ Community Connections

The voter comments offer a reminder that endorsements, fundraising and political experience may not be sufficient on their own.

Candidates must persuade residents that they understand the district’s neighborhoods and will remain accessible after Election Day.

The Aug. 18 primary will determine which nominees advance to the Nov. 3 general election.

The Florida Pundit will continue tracking candidate positions, campaign-finance reports, endorsements and voter information through its Florida Elections 2026 Hub.
