What Moves Florida Politics: Congressional Debates, Governor’s Race Maneuvering, and Property Tax Battles

Published: June 21, 2026

As Florida’s 2026 election cycle enters a new phase following candidate qualifying, campaigns are beginning to sharpen their messages, court endorsements, and prepare for what could become one of the most consequential election years in state history.

From South Florida congressional debates to statewide battles over taxes, spending, and public policy, the political landscape continues to evolve rapidly.

🏛️ DOME is The Florida Pundit’s daily briefing on the people, policies, campaigns, and controversies shaping Florida politics.

Under The Dome

Florida’s election season officially shifted gears after qualifying concluded earlier this month, setting the stage for competitive statewide and congressional races.

One of the most closely watched developments came in South Florida, where U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz defended her decision to run in Congressional District 20 during a contentious Democratic debate as opponents questioned her candidacy in the historically Black district.

The exchange highlighted growing tensions within Democratic ranks as candidates position themselves for August’s primary elections.

Election Watch

Governor’s Race Begins Taking Shape

Republican candidates Byron Donalds, Jay Collins, and Paul Renner continue positioning themselves for a potentially expensive gubernatorial contest.

Donalds remains the highest-profile candidate in the Republican field and continues to receive national attention as the race develops.

On the Democratic side, David Jolly and running mate Gwen Graham are working to build a coalition capable of competing statewide, while Dotie Joseph and Evelyn Castillo-Bach seek to expand their support ahead of the primary.

Congressional Campaigns Heat Up

Candidate qualifying also finalized many congressional contests, bringing additional focus to races expected to attract national attention throughout the summer and fall.

Several South Florida districts remain among the most closely watched races in the state.

Money Trail

Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia continues using state spending reports to highlight what he describes as excessive local government growth.

Recent reviews of Palm Beach and Osceola County spending have fueled broader Republican arguments regarding property taxes, government efficiency, and affordability concerns.

Expect fiscal accountability and tax relief to remain major campaign themes through November.

Read more coverage in our Florida Politics section.

The Swamp

The battle over Florida’s proposed Property Tax Amendment remains one of the state’s most important political and policy fights.

Supporters argue expanding homestead exemptions would provide meaningful tax relief for homeowners.

Critics warn local governments could lose billions of dollars in future revenue, potentially affecting public services and infrastructure projects.

The issue is expected to remain a centerpiece of Florida’s political debate throughout the election cycle.

Accountability Report

Attorney General James Uthmeier continues pursuing several high-profile legal actions involving consumer protection, public safety, and state enforcement priorities.

His office’s recent actions underscore how statewide Cabinet officials increasingly find themselves at the center of both policy debates and campaign messaging.

As the Attorney General race gains attention, both parties are expected to focus heavily on crime, affordability, and government accountability.
