Former Florida House Speaker Paul Renner speaks at a podium while Gov. Ron DeSantis stands behind him during an official event in Florida.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Gov. Ron DeSantis offered his clearest public signal yet about Florida’s 2026 Republican gubernatorial primary, praising former Florida House Speaker Paul Renner as someone who would make a “really good” governor while stopping short of a formal endorsement.

The comments come less than two weeks before Florida Republicans head to the polls in the Aug. 18 primary, adding a new dynamic to a race already shaped by competing conservative visions, high-profile endorsements and a growing focus on who will succeed the term-limited governor.

Although DeSantis stopped short of endorsing Renner, his remarks immediately fueled speculation about whether the former House speaker has become the governor’s preferred successor.

Praise without an endorsement

Speaking publicly as the Republican primary enters its final days, DeSantis described Renner as someone who would make a “really good” governor but emphasized he is not making a formal endorsement in the race.

The distinction is significant.

A formal endorsement from DeSantis could reshape the closing days of the campaign. Instead, his comments recognized Renner’s role in advancing many of the legislative priorities that defined the DeSantis administration while leaving the decision to Republican voters.

Renner served as Speaker of the Florida House during some of the most consequential years of DeSantis’ tenure, helping pass legislation involving education, immigration, tax policy, public safety and parental rights. Throughout his campaign, Renner has argued he is best positioned to preserve and expand the governor’s conservative agenda.

Republican field remains competitive

The Republican primary features several well-known candidates with differing bases of support.

Donalds continues to campaign as the candidate backed by President Donald Trump, while Collins has emphasized his service as lieutenant governor and longtime partnership with the DeSantis administration. Businessman James Fishback has focused heavily on affordability and property tax reform, and other candidates remain on the ballot ahead of the Aug. 18 election.

DeSantis has generally avoided taking sides publicly throughout the campaign, making his praise for Renner especially noteworthy.

Political observers have long viewed whether DeSantis would publicly weigh in on the race as one of the campaign’s biggest unanswered questions..

Legacy at the center of the campaign

Much of the Republican primary has centered on which candidate is best prepared to continue the policies implemented during DeSantis’ two terms.

Renner has consistently argued that, as former House speaker, he helped enact many of those initiatives and possesses the executive and legislative experience needed to build upon them. Donalds has emphasized his alliance with President Trump and conservative record in Congress, while Collins has highlighted his role inside the DeSantis administration.

Whether DeSantis’ comments will shift voter sentiment remains unclear, but they represent one of his most direct public assessments of the Republican field as voting begins across Florida.

With early voting starting in many counties this weekend and Election Day less than two weeks away, campaigns are expected to intensify efforts to persuade undecided Republican voters.

The governor has not indicated whether he intends to issue a formal endorsement before Election Day, leaving Republican voters to decide whether his remarks influence the final days of the campaign.
