MIAMI, Fla. — Florida’s 27th Congressional District Democratic primary has become a closely watched contest between former television journalist Eliott Rodriguez and former federal prosecutor Robin Peguero, as voters prepare to select a challenger to Republican U.S. Rep. María Elvira Salazar in one of South Florida’s most competitive congressional districts.
The Aug. 18 Democratic primary comes as national Democrats seek to reclaim the Miami-area seat, which has become a key battleground in recent election cycles. The winner will advance to the Nov. 3 general election to face Salazar, who is seeking a fourth term in Congress.
Rodriguez emphasizes experience and community ties
Rodriguez, a longtime South Florida television news anchor, launched his campaign in June promising experienced leadership rooted in decades of reporting on the issues affecting Miami-Dade County. He has also emphasized his lifelong Miami roots and deep ties to the communities that make up Florida’s 27th Congressional District.
His campaign has focused on lowering the cost of living, protecting Social Security and Medicare, strengthening public education and expanding access to affordable health care. Rodriguez has also highlighted his longstanding relationships within South Florida’s diverse communities and his decades covering local government and public policy.
Earlier campaign polling suggested Rodriguez entered the race with an advantage, though Democratic voters will ultimately decide the nomination on Election Day.
Peguero campaigns on accountability
Peguero, a former federal prosecutor and former investigative counsel to the U.S. House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, has centered his campaign on government accountability, protecting democratic institutions and expanding economic opportunities for working families.
He has argued that his legal background and federal investigative experience prepare him to confront corruption, defend voting rights and advocate for South Florida in Congress.
Throughout the campaign, both candidates have sought to distinguish themselves on issues including housing affordability, immigration, health care and economic opportunity.
Salazar awaits Democratic challenger
Republican Rep. María Elvira Salazar, who is seeking a fourth term, has continued to emphasize border security, economic growth and support for South Florida’s Cuban American community. During her tenure, she has occasionally broken with fellow Republicans on immigration issues, including urging changes to aspects of the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
Salazar appears well positioned to secure the Republican nomination as she seeks a fourth term, benefiting from incumbency and endorsements from prominent Republican leaders. She faces attorney V. Michael Arias in the Republican primary.
The general election is expected to draw significant national attention, with both parties viewing the district as an important battleground in the fight for control of the U.S. House.
Campaign enters final stretch
With early voting underway and the Aug. 18 primary approaching, both Rodriguez and Peguero are intensifying campaign events, voter outreach and fundraising efforts across Miami-Dade County.
The Democratic nominee will face a challenging general election against Salazar, whose district has become one of Florida’s most competitive congressional seats despite recent Republican gains in South Florida.
