🏛️ DOME | What Moves Florida Politics

Florida’s 2026 election cycle continues to take shape as statewide officials, candidates, and policymakers position themselves for what is expected to be one of the most consequential election years in recent memory.

The debate over Florida’s proposed property tax amendment remains front and center, while Attorney General James Uthmeier expanded the state’s crackdown on concentrated 7-OH compounds and candidates across several statewide races continue building campaign organizations ahead of next year’s elections.

🏛️ DOME is The Florida Pundit’s daily briefing on the people, policies, campaigns, and controversies shaping Florida politics.

Under The Dome

Florida voters are increasingly hearing about one issue that could ultimately overshadow many campaign messages in 2026: property taxes.

The proposed constitutional amendment expanding Florida’s homestead exemption continues generating debate among lawmakers, local governments, and taxpayer advocates. Supporters argue homeowners need meaningful relief as housing costs remain elevated, while critics warn local governments could lose billions in future revenue.

The measure is expected to become one of the most heavily debated ballot questions in the state.

Election Watch

Statewide Races Continue Taking Shape

Several statewide contests are beginning to move beyond the candidate qualifying stage and into campaign-building mode.

Attorney General James Uthmeier continues leveraging the visibility of his office through high-profile policy actions and enforcement initiatives, while Democratic nominee José Javier Rodriguez is working to build momentum after posting a stronger fundraising period earlier this month.

Meanwhile, Florida Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia remains active on fiscal accountability issues as Democrats look for opportunities to challenge Republicans in statewide Cabinet races.

Miami-Dade Faces Crowded Election Cycle

South Florida voters will face one of the busiest ballots in recent years.

Miami-Dade residents are expected to weigh in on statewide races, congressional contests, local referendums, judicial elections, county offices, municipal races, and Florida’s proposed property tax amendment during the 2026 election cycle.

The combination of local and statewide issues could help drive voter participation in one of Florida’s most politically influential counties.

Money Trail

Fundraising remains one of the clearest indicators of campaign strength heading into election season.

Recent reports showed José Javier Rodriguez outraising Attorney General James Uthmeier during the first half of June, while Republicans continue to maintain significant overall financial advantages across several statewide contests.

Campaign finance reports released throughout the summer will offer important clues about which races may become truly competitive.

Accountability Report

Uthmeier Expands 7-OH Crackdown

Attorney General James Uthmeier signed an emergency rule placing highly concentrated 7-OH compounds and several related substances on Florida’s Schedule I controlled substances list.

State officials argue the products pose serious public health risks and have linked them to overdoses, addiction concerns, and poison control cases. The rule immediately expands enforcement authority against manufacturers, distributors, and retailers found violating the new restrictions.

The action represents one of the most significant public safety initiatives announced by the Attorney General’s Office this month.

The Swamp

The battle over Florida’s future tax structure is quietly becoming one of the most important policy fights in Tallahassee.

As lawmakers, local officials, and advocacy groups prepare for the 2026 campaign season, property taxes, government spending, and affordability concerns continue emerging as recurring themes.

Expect those issues to remain central to statewide races well into next year.

What We’re Watching

• Additional fundraising reports from statewide candidates.

• New developments involving Florida’s Property Tax Amendment.

• Potential endorsements in the Governor’s race.

• Further legal and regulatory action involving 7-OH products.

• Candidate activity in South Florida congressional races.
