Ken Griffin, founder and CEO of Citadel, donated $2.5 million to a super PAC supporting U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody.

MIAMI — Miami billionaire and Citadel founder Ken Griffin has contributed $2.5 million to a super PAC supporting U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody, reinforcing Republican efforts to defend the Florida Senate seat while fueling speculation about the importance national donors are placing on the race.

Federal campaign finance filings show Griffin made the contribution in May to Stronger Safer Nation, an independent expenditure committee supporting Moody’s 2026 Senate campaign.

The donation matches the amount Griffin recently gave to Republican Senate efforts in Maine and Alaska while also contributing $1.5 million to support Iowa congressional candidate Ashley Hinson’s Senate campaign.

Although Florida has trended reliably Republican in recent statewide elections, Griffin’s investment has drawn attention because the state is generally viewed as less competitive than several other Senate battlegrounds this cycle.

National donors continue investing in Florida

Democratic officials argue the contribution reflects growing Republican concern about Florida’s Senate race.

Alex Vindman’s campaign, which is competing for the Democratic nomination, suggested the influx of outside money demonstrates Republicans are taking the contest seriously despite Florida’s Republican voter registration advantage.

Republicans reject that characterization.

Florida Republican Party Chairman Evan Power said Griffin’s contribution is consistent with his long-standing support for Republican candidates and his deep ties to Florida after relocating Citadel’s headquarters from Chicago to Miami.

“Ken Griffin lives here in Florida and has been a great partner with the Florida GOP,” Power said. “It shouldn’t surprise anyone that he cares about Florida.”

A spokesperson for Griffin said his political giving is based on policy priorities rather than concerns about Republican prospects in Florida.

In a statement, Griffin praised Moody’s record of public service.

“Ashley Moody has committed nearly half her life to public service on behalf of the people of Florida,” Griffin said. “I am proud to support her as she continues to advance the principles of freedom and opportunity that have made Florida an exceptional place to live, work, and raise a family.”

Griffin has become one of Florida’s most influential donors

Since relocating Citadel to Miami, Griffin has emerged as one of Florida’s most prominent business leaders and Republican political donors.

He has contributed millions of dollars to Republican candidates and committees at both the state and federal levels while becoming increasingly involved in education, philanthropy and economic development throughout South Florida.

His latest contribution comes as outside groups prepare to spend heavily during the final months of Florida’s Senate campaign.

Unlike candidate committees, federal law prohibits super PACs from coordinating directly with campaigns.

Republicans build financial advantage

The contribution also highlights the growing role independent expenditure committees are expected to play during the general election.

While Democrats continue organizing for what they hope will become a competitive race, Republican outside organizations are already assembling substantial financial resources to defend Moody’s seat.

Stronger Safer Nation has raised millions of dollars since launching last year and is expected to invest heavily in television advertising, digital media and voter outreach before Election Day.

The committee’s latest fundraising report shows Griffin’s contribution was its single largest donation during the reporting period.

Additional contributions came from Florida business leaders, Republican donors and corporate interests supporting Moody’s election effort.

Florida’s Republican primary is scheduled for Aug. 18, with the general election on Nov. 3.

The Florida Pundit will continue following campaign finance developments and Florida’s 2026 elections, including the U.S. Senate race, as Election Day approaches.
