Oliver Larkin’s campaign for Congress received a boost Friday as the Democratic challenger announced endorsements from State Rep. Angie Nixon and progressive activist Phillip Agnew, a former senior adviser to Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign.
The endorsements strengthen Larkin’s standing among progressive voters as he mounts a primary challenge against U.S. Rep. Jared Moskowitz in Florida’s 25th Congressional District.
“Oliver isn’t running to manage the status quo. He’s running to challenge it,” Nixon said in a statement released by the campaign. “Working people need leaders willing to fight for affordable healthcare, good-paying jobs, and a government that serves people instead of corporate interests.”
Nixon, a Jacksonville Democrat currently running for the U.S. Senate, has built a reputation as one of the Legislature’s most progressive voices. Her endorsement places Larkin firmly within the party’s progressive wing as he attempts to distinguish himself from Moskowitz.
Larkin also secured support from Phillip Agnew, a longtime progressive organizer who served as a senior adviser to Sen. Bernie Sanders during his 2020 presidential campaign. Agnew is also known as a co-founder of Dream Defenders, a Florida-based activist organization launched after the 2012 shooting death of Trayvon Martin.
“At a time when too many politicians are protecting the powerful, Oliver is building a campaign centered on working people,” Agnew said. “He’s offering a vision that matches the scale of the challenges families are facing every day.”
Larkin welcomed the endorsements, saying they reflect growing support for a campaign focused on economic justice and political reform.
“I’m honored to earn the support of leaders who have spent their lives fighting for economic justice, civil rights, and working people,” Larkin said. “This campaign is bringing together people who believe politics should serve ordinary Americans, not wealthy donors and corporate interests.”
The endorsements arrive as Democrats begin paying closer attention to Florida’s 25th Congressional District, a seat expected to receive significant attention during the 2026 election cycle.
Moskowitz remains one of Florida Democrats’ most prominent elected officials and enters the race with substantial fundraising advantages and strong name recognition. However, Larkin’s campaign hopes to capitalize on progressive dissatisfaction with establishment politics and build grassroots momentum.
The district itself could become increasingly competitive under Florida’s current congressional map. While voters in the district favored Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, the area supported Joe Biden four years earlier, highlighting the region’s shifting political landscape.
As the Democratic primary develops, Larkin’s campaign appears focused on consolidating support from progressives and activists seeking a more aggressive left-wing voice in Congress.
