NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — Republican Rep. Cory Mills defended his congressional record Wednesday night during a contentious debate in Florida’s 7th Congressional District Republican primary, as his three challengers pressed him on ethics concerns, reports of a Justice Department investigation, campaign fundraising and a series of personal controversies.

The debate, held in New Smyrna Beach less than two weeks before Florida’s Aug. 18 Republican primary, followed weeks of campaigning after Mills agreed to debate his Republican challengers.

Hosted by the Volusia County Republican Executive Committee, the debate featured Mills, Ryan Elijah, Sarah Ulrich and Michael Don Johnson discussing issues facing Republican voters ahead of the Aug. 18 primary.

Mills entered the debate amid increased scrutiny over an ongoing House Ethics Committee investigation and recent reports of a Justice Department inquiry. The allegations have become a central issue in the Republican primary campaign, with challengers repeatedly citing them on the campaign trail.

The congressman also faces growing pressure from Republican challengers who argue the district needs new leadership heading into the November general election.

Ryan Elijah Presses Mills on Investigations

Elijah has attempted to make ethics concerns and government accountability a central theme of his campaign, earning endorsements from two prominent Central Florida sheriffs ahead of the debate.

Elijah also questioned reports surrounding Mills’ personal life and challenged rumors that the congressman had threatened to break with House Republican leadership on key votes.

The exchange became one of the most heated moments of the evening as Mills rejected the allegations and characterized them as politically motivated attacks.

Other Challengers Raise Additional Questions

Businesswoman Sarah Ulrich focused much of her questioning on Mills’ background, previous relationships and record in office.

At one point, Ulrich asked why so many allegations had surfaced against the incumbent.

“I’m just curious. What makes you such an awesome rockstar in Congress, that this many people want to come after you with false accusations?” Ulrich asked.

Republican candidate Michael Don Johnson also criticized Mills throughout the debate, raising questions about allegations involving Ukraine arms deals, accusations of stolen valor, previous marriages and his support for former President Donald Trump.

Mills disputed the claims and said many of the allegations have been repeatedly circulated without evidence supporting criminal wrongdoing.

Mills Defends His Congressional Record

Responding to criticism, Mills argued his record in Congress has made him a target because of his conservative voting record and willingness to challenge Washington politics.

“When you’re the third-lowest Republican seat in the state of Florida, and you lead the entire state in constituent services, when you flip this seat from blue to red which makes it a target, when you fight for President Trump and even though it’s an R+5 district, I vote like it’s an R+35 district,” Mills said.

He continued:

“That’s why they want to ruin me, that’s why they want me out, and that’s why there hasn’t ever been any charges found guilty, only accusations and allegations. Same thing they did to President Trump.”

Race Enters Final Stretch

The debate came just hours after Republican Reps. Anna Paulina Luna and Mike Haridopolos endorsed challenger Ryan Elijah, adding another high-profile development to the increasingly competitive race.

Despite the attacks during Wednesday’s debate, Mills entered the event with momentum after a recent public poll showed him leading the Republican primary field, though a sizable share of voters remained undecided.

Florida’s 7th Congressional District, which includes Seminole County and parts of Volusia County, is expected to remain competitive in the November general election.

Republican voters will choose their nominee in the Aug. 18 primary, with the winner advancing to the November general election.
