Florida Democratic gubernatorial candidates speak during a candidate forum ahead of the 2026 primary election.

As Florida Democrats prepare for the August primary and the general election that follows, an increasingly public debate is emerging within the party over its political strategy and the candidates leading the statewide ticket.

While former Republican Congressman David Jolly remains the Democratic frontrunner for governor and retired Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman leads the party’s U.S. Senate primary, some Democratic activists and candidates are questioning whether the two campaigns can generate the enthusiasm needed to rebuild the party’s statewide coalition.

The discussion surfaced during the Florida Democratic Party’s annual Leadership Blue conference, where party officials, candidates, elected leaders and grassroots organizers gathered to discuss campaign strategy, voter outreach and preparations for the November election.

A Debate Over the Party’s Direction

Several Democratic candidates and activists have argued that Florida Democrats must do more than appeal to moderate and independent voters if they hope to become competitive statewide again.

Instead, they say the party must also energize its traditional base, including younger voters, Black voters, Latino communities and progressive activists who have expressed frustration after years of statewide electoral losses.

Some Democratic candidates have publicly questioned whether nominating former Republicans or more moderate candidates is the most effective path forward, pointing to previous statewide campaigns that failed to unseat Republicans despite significant financial support.

Others argue that Florida’s voter registration advantage for Republicans makes appealing to independents and crossover Republicans unavoidable if Democrats hope to compete statewide.

Jolly Continues to Lead Democratic Field

Despite the internal debate, David Jolly continues to enter the final weeks before the primary with significant advantages in fundraising, statewide name recognition and campaign infrastructure.

Jolly, who represented Pinellas County in Congress as a Republican before leaving the party, has campaigned on expanding access to affordable housing, lowering insurance costs, strengthening public education and restoring what he describes as a more bipartisan approach to governing.

Supporters argue his background allows him to appeal to independent voters and moderate Republicans who may be dissatisfied with the current political environment.

Vindman Focuses on Building a Broad Coalition

Alexander Vindman has similarly emphasized building what he describes as a “big tent” Democratic coalition capable of competing in Florida’s changing political landscape.

The retired Army officer and former National Security Council official has consistently argued that Democrats must attract independents while maintaining support from the party’s traditional base if they hope to compete against Republicans statewide.

That balancing act has become one of the central strategic questions facing Florida Democrats as they prepare for November.

Republicans Hold Registration Advantage

The discussion comes as Republicans continue to hold a significant voter registration advantage in Florida, a reversal from just a few years ago when Democrats maintained a statewide edge.

Republicans have also won every statewide election since 2018, making Florida one of the GOP’s strongest states in recent election cycles.

Democratic leaders acknowledge the challenge but argue changing demographics, competitive congressional races and growing concerns over housing affordability, property insurance and education could create opportunities this year.

Whether that translates into statewide victories remains one of the biggest unanswered questions heading into the general election.

With only weeks remaining before Florida’s primary elections, both parties are increasingly focused on motivating their supporters while expanding their appeal to the growing number of independent voters expected to play a decisive role this fall.
