As the battle for control of the U.S. House intensifies ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, national Republicans are making Florida’s newly drawn 22nd Congressional District one of their top priorities.

The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) announced Monday that it has added Florida’s 22nd District to its expanded list of offensive targets, identifying the open South Florida seat as a key opportunity to help Republicans strengthen their House majority. The district is one of seven new additions to the committee’s national target list, bringing the total number of Democratic-held or open seats Republicans are targeting to 36.

With control of the House expected to be decided by only a handful of competitive districts nationwide, both parties are investing early in races they believe could determine the chamber’s balance of power after the November election.

The move comes less than two weeks after the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) identified the same district as one of its own top battlegrounds, signaling that both parties expect the race to be among the most competitive congressional contests in Florida this year.

A Newly Drawn Battleground

Florida’s 22nd Congressional District was created as part of the state’s revised congressional map and stretches across portions of Broward and Palm Beach counties before extending west across the state toward Southwest Florida.

The seat is open following redistricting, creating a rare opportunity for both parties in a region that has historically featured competitive elections while also experiencing shifting voting patterns.

National Republicans argue the district’s new boundaries make it more favorable to GOP candidates than previous versions of the seat. The NRCC has pointed to President Donald Trump’s performance in the district during the 2024 election as evidence that Republicans have a realistic opportunity to flip the seat.

House Majority at Stake

Republicans currently hold a narrow majority in the U.S. House, leaving little margin for losses in competitive districts. Both national parties are expected to spend heavily in key battleground races, and Florida’s newly created 22nd Congressional District has quickly emerged as one of those contests.

With Republicans defending a narrow majority, both national parties are investing heavily in competitive districts across the country. Florida is expected to play an outsized role because of its growing population, recent redistricting changes, and several open congressional seats.

Adding Florida’s 22nd District to the target list means the NRCC is expected to devote additional fundraising, advertising, voter outreach, and campaign resources to the race over the coming months. Democrats are expected to do the same after previously naming the district to their own battlefield map.

An Expensive South Florida Contest

Political analysts expect the race to become one of Florida’s most expensive congressional campaigns this cycle.

Outside organizations, party committees, and independent expenditure groups are likely to pour millions of dollars into television advertising, digital outreach, and voter mobilization as both parties compete for a district viewed as critical to determining which party controls the House in 2027.

Candidate qualifying and the August primary will provide a clearer picture of the general election matchup, but both national parties have already signaled that Florida’s 22nd District will remain a top priority through Election Day.
